George Takei on Kim Davis: ‘This woman is no hero to be celebrated’

Following the Mike Huckabee-inspired fiasco of Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis’ release from custody, famed actor and LGBT activist George Takei has weighed in with his take on the Davis debacle.

Posting on his Facebook, Takei wrote:

Well this is a bit of a circus. So let us be clear: This woman is no hero to be celebrated. She broke her oath to uphold the Constitution and defied a court order so she could deny government services to couples who are legally entitled to be married. She is entitled to hold her religious beliefs, but not to impose those beliefs on others. If she had denied marriage certificates to an interracial couple, would people cheer her? Would presidential candidates flock to her side? In our society, we obey civil laws, not religious ones. To suggest otherwise is, simply put, entirely un-American.

Good for you, George!

  1. I am a straight born again “old guy” Christian, and agree 100 percent!! Just know that some of us don’t consider Huckabee a worthy candidate. Thanks for chiming in.

  2. Laughable, ha! Why don’t you tell Obozo that! His corrupt regime never saw a law that they weren’t willing to break! Hypocrite pervert!

  3. I grew up next state from KY and know firsthand how these people think. She did it for the attention. Did anyone see how she went from crying to praising in a few seconds? She got her 15 minutes worth of fame now move on. I’ve seen how they treat people that don’t think like them. They do their hating Monday thru Saturday and do the Christian thing on Sunday. Creepy. Just CREEPY.

  4. That woman had more balls than Mr. Sulu. .At least she stood up for what she believed. Takei hid his homosexuality for decades like the coward he is. You didn’t really expect a homo like him to praise her did you? Beam him back into the closet.

  5. Exactly, if she wants to hold to her religious beliefs, great, then she should not be holding a public office. She has to make a choice.

  6. George is going to hell…….Not by my judgement but, by OUR CREATOR”S…..George has until his last breath to ask for forgiveness. …..If you could ask the man next to Christ, he would confirm…..The mystery is…..You cant ask him…….I am FAR from perfect but, I am forgiven and DONT live in perpetual sin

  7. Indeed, good for you George. I applaud you like I would my child for standing up for his beliefs. Although not surprised by your stance, you can berate other for standing up for their convictions when they are in conflict with your own, but you applaud those who stand firm on convictions when then are synonymous. In short, why do we care what you think?

  8. George Takei,

She is exercising her 1st Amendment rights and following a Kentucky law still on the books. What is Un-American is prohibiting people from exercising their 1st Amendment rights, which by the way our country was founded upon.

  9. Good for George and good for Kim Davis. George has his view and opinion and Kim has hers and George is not being jailed for his weird belief so why should Kim be jailed for hers!

    1. To David and Mary,
Slavery, women’s right to vote, legalization of Marijuana, planned parenthood, same-sex marriage… all fall in the same category. This will go down in history (not Kim Davis) as issues which will blow our minds because they were ever issue in the first place. Are you kidding me???

  10. Interesting? Your point seems to make her disobeyal un-American?! Could the same be said of Martin Luther rallies. Nelson Mandela went to prison over his beliefs? Laws change DUE to strongly held ‘beliefs’ that ARE debated? Should she be called un-American for asking to debate this ‘change’? Just because the Supreme Court gives their interpretation against her beliefs does not mean new law should be written by those ‘supposed’ to make civil law the Congress?
Debate/protests should NOT be discouraged even if you are not in the majority opinion—

  11. I agree with what George is saying, But, people don’t get that the Kim Davis problem has more to do with her control issues than her religious beliefs. She lives to control, to be the queen of her own domain. The conflict with her religious beliefs has given her a big stick that she can use control people and contradict even people of higher authority, at least in her own mind. So, the more people argue and fuss, the more it’s just feeding her delusions of empowerment. If you want to take the wind out of sails, pity her and treat her as someone who is emotionally challenged and unable to deal with the real world.

  12. This woman has shown her CONTEMPT of the Supreme Court and District and Appeals Courts. When her county pays her $80,000/yr to do a CIVIL not religious job, she should do her job if she takes the money. Civil Marriage is a contract between the STATE and 2 people and has NOTHING to do with any religion.

  13. The fact that this woman is being praised as some sort of “folk hero” by conservatives shows just how disconnected from reality they have become over on the far right.

She has been compared to Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks by some conservatives, a comparison that could not be more dishonest or intellectually bankrupt.

Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks fought to give MORE rights to people– they were not fighting to DEPRIVE others of their Constitutional rights.

Kim Davis is NOT Rosa Parks– Kim Davis is the bus driver telling the black people they have to sit in the back, and trying to attach her bigotry to some higher meaning by claiming she is defending her “religious freedom”.

People like Kim Davis fail to realize that the Constitution NEVER gave anyone the right to enforce their religion on others. Ammendment 1 strictly forbids this.

Simply put– she holds a public office. Government officials have to serve the ENTIRE PUBLIC, not just the ones they want to. if she cannot perform the duties as detaild in the job description any longer because of her religious beliefs– she has the FREEDOM to go find another job that she can actually perform without causing herself such emotional stress.

She NEVER had the right to hold all the people in her county hostage, before or after the SCOTUS decision. You either do the job you are paid to do, or you resign. Her refusal to resign is like what a dog does when it is not hungry– it pisses on the food so no other dogs can use it either.
