San Diego will be graced at this year’s San Diego Pride with not only one Aussie, but two.
Famed Australian DJ tyDi will grace the Pride stage, and brings with him a slew of accolades including being voted as Australia’s No.1 DJ for two years now; pretty impressive for a guy who started DJing only a few years ago.
The DJ, known only as tyDi is not so forthcoming about the origins of his name, or why he chose it. And while rumors abound, he is tight lipped when it comes to divulging its beginnings.
“There are a few rumors flying around about that,” tyDi quipped. “I like to make up various stories to keep people guessing!”
While he has been to San Diego many times before he is really looking forward to his upcoming trip.
“I’ve been to San Diego lots of times now,” tyDi said. “It’s such a beautiful city, I grew by the beach and I’m in love with coastal places. I usually head down to San Diego to play shows at clubs there; this next trip for Pride is going to be awesome; I can’t wait to play my new tunes there!”
While tyDi is best known for his work as a DJ, his talent doesn’t stop there. He is well trained and schooled in music and oddly enough is the only one in his family with a love of music. But that doesn’t stop him from writing and producing his own music.
“I have a bachelor’s degree in music where I learned a lot of theory,” tyDi admitted. “But I did teach myself piano and drums [and] I compose and produce a lot of music, most of my DJ sets consist of my own songs. I have a very diverse taste in music. My album Shooting Stars ranged from house to electro, pop, dub step and trance. My next album Hotel Rooms was all orchestral, acoustic and ambient. This year I have a new album coming out called Redefined, which stays true to my more EDM style, the music my fans have come to expect from me. I’m not a very good singer at all, but yes I do write everything myself.”
When tyDi is asked who are some of his greatest inspirations he jokes a bit but underneath it all it all comes back to music for him.
“Emma Stone, Scarlett Johansson and that girl from the blurred lines video …” tyDi joked. “No, but seriously, I’m very inspired by the bands I used to listen to growing up like Dashboard Confessional (who’s on my new album!).”
He’s very excited that among all of his tour dates, that San Diego Pride is his only Pride gig this year.
“I’m always on tour,” tyDi said. “Last weekend I was in China and now I’m about to play all over America and then on to Australia before the Pride event. But yes, this is the only Pride event that I’m playing at this year and I’m very excited!”
Another thing that he’s looking forward to at San Diego Pride is his reunion with fellow Aussie Ruby Rose.
“Ruby Rose is a very good friend of mine,” tyDi said, “She’s an absolute sweetheart. I’ve known her from when we both used to live back in Australia and played around the club circuit there. So happy to meet up with her at [San Diego] Pride.”
One of the many things that tyDi has been working on aside from touring, DJing and producing and writing music is his radio show/podcast. The show hit 213 episodes this past December and shows no signs of slowing down.
“The show is called Global Soundsystem,” tyDi explained. “I’ve been doing it for about five years now! It’s syndicated in 35 countries around the world on FM radio and also is available on iTunes as a podcast. The idea of the show is an outlet for me to show my fans new music every week that they may not get to hear. My tour schedule is crazy but without the show I wouldn’t be able to reach as many people as I do.”
After he’s done with Pride and his touring for the year, tyDi is looking forward to his new album coming out. This album will follow his debut album Look Closer that was released in 2009. Since then he has released almost an album a year. His new album Redefined has been a work in progress for some time now and he is anxious for its release.
“It’s out in September and I can’t wait,” tyDi said. “I have been working on it for three years now.”
tyDi’s music can be purchased on amazon.com, iTunes and armadamusic.com and you can still catch his radio show/podcast Global Soundsystem which is available in over 30 countries, and can be downloaded on iTunes and now SoundCloud.
tyDi will be appearing on the Stonewall Main Stage at San Diego Pride Saturday July 19 at 8 p.m. For more information on tyDi visit tydi.com
