San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus ‘Six Things to Know About the Sixties’

The 1960s was a tapestry of peace and war, protests and love-ins woven together on a backdrop of fluorescent, black-light butterflies.  Navigating was a trip unto itself.  So, to help audiences survive the decade once again at its new concert Feelin’ Groovy—Songs of the ‘60s, the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus has issued the following six “helpful hints.”

1.  The Wah Watusi is not an entrée at Wangs, the Mashed Potato isn’t a side dish at Martini’s and the Hanky Panky isn’t an activity on Mo’s patio (well, ok, maybe it is).  They’re all dances you’ll see first-hand at Feelin’ Groovy!

2.  Yes, Beyonce is the “Love Child” of Diana Ross and the Supremes following a Three Dog Night in San Francisco and was raised by The Mamas & the Papas.

3.  Today’s “hipsters” can trace their origins to the Sixties “hippies” twice removed from “yuppies” and “guppies” and multiplied by black, horned-rimmed glasses.

4.  Motown is not the ice cream parlor Moo Time in Coronado.

5.  As confirmed by presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, the British Invasion did arrive “two if by sea” in a yellow submarine helmed by The Beatles.

6.  And, yes, the world’s greatest TV theme songs premiered in the Sixties.  Just ask Gilligan, Betty & Wilma, Morticia Addams, Mr. Ed, Barney Fife and Elly May and her partner Miss Jane.

Feelin’ Groovy opens  Saturday, July 27 at 8 p.m. with two shows on Sunday, July 28 at 2 and 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are $25 to $40 and may be purchased at www.sdgmc.org or (877) 296-7664.  A $5 discount is available for seniors, students, military and groups of 10 or more.  The Birch North Park Theatre is located at 2891 University Avenue.

  1. I take it Rush is referring to the FDAs’ recommendations about salt intake and its effect on blood pressure. It is the first time I know of that he has been right about anything.
