In a landmark move for professional sports organizations against LGBT discrimination, the San Francisco Giants released a highly anticipated video yesterday for the It Gets Better Project on behalf of LGBT youth.

USA Today reports that the video, which features a number of Giants players including well-known pitcher Barry Zito, expresses empathy with teens and young adults struggling to fit in and urges LGBT youth to seek help, friends and comfort in the fact that they are not alone – and that the struggle will eventually “get better.

After a successful Change.org campaign driven by S.F. Giants fan and member of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus Sean Chapin, the Giants acknowledged overwhelming support for their participation in the It Gets Better Project by accelerating their plans to produce a video and releasing the finished product this week.

Chapin collected over 65,000 signatures through his online campaign initiative with Change.org, and hopes that the combined power of social media and social justice movements on behalf of LGBT equality and advocacy will help bring an end to scandals like Kobe Bryant’s recent homophobic slur on the basketball court.

Similar campaigns pushing both the Yankees and the Red Sox to join the Giants in producing a video for the It Gets Better Project are currently underway.
