No longer is the gay prom queen a figment of Glee plot lines and teen fantasy: Jake Boyer, an openly gay senior at Blacksburg High, took home the tiara this year in what he and others are counting as a resounding victory for LGBT equality.
NBC Washington reports that Boyer, who came out earlier this year, added his name to the prom queen candidate list after friends urged him to give it a shot. In what Boyer dubbed a “social experiment gone right,” running for prom queen allowed him to fully embrace his identity – and now he intends to show it off, tiara and all.
Boyer accepted his crown at the Blacksburg High senior prom wearing a Lady Gag-inspired getup.
“More than anything,” he said, “this experiment just gave me hope for the future.”
Sure enough, Boyer’s win is just one among several LGBT prom victories over the weekend. Look out ladies – competition for the coveted prom queen tiara just got a whole lot tougher.
