Cuomo optimistic gay marriage will soon be legal in New York

NEW YORK – Governor Andrew Cuomo is optimistic that gay marriage will soon be legal in New York.

He said he felt there was enough support to pass the measure, which he has endorsed. Cuomo said, “I know it’s failed before, but I think this is a different day. I’ll bring more urgency in the next few weeks.”

The bill needs 32 votes to pass the Senate in the next six weeks and Cuomo said he was confident that the votes would be found.

Cuomo wants lawmakers to pass the bill, along with a property tax cap in the current legislative session in Albany. The legislature is expected to take up the issue of gay marriage in its remaining six-weeks of work.
