SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The San Diego LGBT Center will hold a “Defend DACA Rally” at 6 p.m. today, Tuesday, Sept.5 at the San Diego County Waterfront Park — water fountain facing Harbor Drive (1600 Pacific Hwy, San Diego).
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), is an Obama program started four years ago. The government will wind the program down, to give Congress time to find a legislative solution. Today, these young people, known as Dreamers, work for every major U.S. corporation and contribute billions to the economy; last week in Texas, Dreamers were some of the first to join rescue efforts for Hurricane Harvey.
“Immigration is an LGBT issue because immigrants are part our LGBT community,” The Center stated in an email. “The Williams Institute estimate that there are 75,000 Dreamers who are LGBT, with about one third living in California. Immigrants are also our allies, family members, neighbors, co-workers, fellow students, and friends. Our LGBT movement for justice is also linked to immigrant rights. Now, more than ever, we need to stand up for our immigrant community in San Diego. Our DACA community needs our support! Here are two things you can do today to stand with our immigrant community.”
1. Join The Center today at the Defend DACA Rally
2. Give a donation to United We Dream, the largest immigrant youth-led organization in the nation.
