A party in the memory of Meldon “Mel” Merrill is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23 at The San Diego LGBT Center, 3909 Centre Street from 3-6 p.m.
Merrill, 80, passed away Aug. 10 and tributes have been pouring in for the longtime Democratic activist who worked for the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation. He was also involved with Lambda Archives.
His husband, David Ramos, said Mel did not want a memorial service, so this will be a party for all who wish to celebrate his life.
Merrill was a volunteer in many local campaigns for Democrats and often worked behind the scenes, particularly for LGBT candidates. He enjoyed discussing politics and joined the San Diego Democratic Club in 1977.
In the 1980s and 1990s, he was known by the handle of Neutron on the Genesis and Andros BBS, short for bulletin board service as they were then known by. He married Ramos Aug. 5, 2016.
