SAN DIEGO, Calif., — Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) will welcome United States Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera back to his hometown of Barrio Logan as the honored speaker for the Spirit of the Barrio luncheon. Herrera will share stories about his childhood, the influences of his migrant farmworker parents and how his passion for poetry led him from the Barrio to being appointed the United States Poet Laureate by the Library of Congress.

In addition, special honoree Dr. James Dunford will be presented with the Spirit of the Barrio Award for his commitment to helping San Diego’s most vulnerable populations receive health care and support services.

ABC 10News Reporter Lindsey Pena will emcee the event held on Friday, July 21, from 11:30 a.m. to
1 p.m. at the Logan Heights Family Health Center located at 1809 National Avenue.

Tickets to attend the luncheon are $25 and available for purchase at www.fhcsd.org/spirit-of-the-barrio.

For 2017, all proceeds raised through Spirit of the Barrio events will be matched by our generous partners at the David C. Copley Foundation. The contributions will be used to expand dental services in FHCSD clinics.

Since 1986, this unique luncheon has provided a platform to discuss currents events, offered networking opportunities to guests and raised financial support for FHCSD’s mission to provide high-quality health care for underserved communities. About 400 guests attend each luncheon quarterly.
