LOS ANGELS, Calif. — L.A.-based cartoonist Sonya Saturday has launched a Kickstarter campaign to publish her latest satirical coloring book, this time featuring “portraits of sexy White Ladies giving empty lip service to some of today’s major social issues.”
From a bikini-clad poser “supporting” Standing Rock to selfie-styled ladies stating platitudes like “I don’t see race,” the coloring book’s ribald drawings and funny activities are “an accessible, non-threatening way to poke fun at American culture.” According to Saturday, the artwork is a response to today’s sociopolitical climate and the superficial nature of hashtag activism.
“It’s meant to poke fun at privileged white ladies who try to be socially aware about issues around race and gender and sexuality, but who really do very little to actually promote progress for marginalized groups,” Saturday says in her Kickstarter video.
The book, plus limited edition artwork, are available for backers on Kickstarter until Sunday, July 30 2017 at 3 p.m. PT.
