Dine with Sam the Cooking Guy and Mama

On May 6, Mama’s Kitchen presents the 20th annual Mama’s Day – A Mosaic of Taste, a fundraising event showcasing an extensive array of delicious food and unforgettable desserts offered by San Diego’s finest chefs.

“The short version is: you go; there is a lot of food; you taste from almost 60 restaurants; and you have a great time,” said Sam “the Cooking Guy” Zien, who once again serves as the event’s culinary host. “It’s just about the most kick-ass foodie event of the year, certainly of the season.”

Hosted at Hyatt Regency La Jolla Aventine, the poolside extravaganza is one of San Diego’s most popular social and culinary events, featuring more than 60 of San Diego’s top restaurants and chefs, two premium wine vaults, entertainment, raffles and a silent auction.

Zien – who jokes that his last name is really not “the Cooking Guy” – says the event is the world’s largest cocktail party with some of the best restaurants providing the food.

“They are all bringing their ‘A’ game,” he said, explaining the restaurants are not only supporting Mama’s Kitchen, but also introducing their food to potentially new eaters. “Nobody is making just chips and dips kind of things. People are bringing the crazy-ass kind of stuff, the stuff that is the reason God created restaurants. That is why you go to restaurants, for the kind of stuff that mere mortals like you and me don’t do on our own at home.”

Zien should know. He’s hosted his own cooking show for about 10 years, published three cook books, and is getting ready for a new uncensored live podcast.

“If you are even a little bit of a foodie, you should be there. If you are a decent foodie, you want to be there, absolutely for sure,” he said, adding, “And come hungry. If you eat lunch that day, you’ve made a big mistake.”

Additional highlights include a VIP reception from 5:30-6:30 p.m. – where you can hobnob with Zien – plus opportunity drawings for once-in-a-lifetime prizes and a silent auction.

Regular admission into Mama’s Day is $125 per person ($150 at the door), and $250 for VIP admission. For more information and to buy tickets, log on to mamaskitchen.org.
