Katy Perry, the mega pop star made famous by cheeky tracks like “Ur So Gay” and “I Kissed A Girl,” spoke with Vanity Fair for this month’s cover story about growing up in a born-again Christian household – and learning to forge her own path and accept all others in the process.
Perry’s approach to tolerance is more “live and let live” than activist-oriented – but she is happy to “coexist” as long as she can also be herself as an artist and newlywed with husband Russell Brand.
Refreshingly enough, Perry and her family have a strong relationship despite their pointed lifestyle differences. “I think sometimes when children grow up, their parents grow up,” Perry told Vanity Fair. “Mine grew up with me…I don’t try to change them anymore, and I don’t think they try to change me.” In a world rife with discrimination and inequality, Perry’s laid back, even-handed approach to tolerance sets a good example for anyone who, like the singer herself, is still learning about, absorbing and observing the world.
