An appeals court in New Jersey Friday threw out the convictions against Dharun Ravi, whose roommate, Tyler Clementi, killed himself after he was captured on a webcam kissing another man.

The New York Times reported that the Appellate Division of the Superior Court of New Jersey in Newark overturned a lower court’s conviction of the ex-roommate, Ravi, on several counts of bias intimidation because of a change in state law.

The court called for a new trial of Ravi on 10 other counts that included invasion of privacy and tampering with evidence.

Some of the charges that Ravi was convicted of fell under a state statute on bias intimidation which the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled was unconstitutional last year.
