SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Immediately following the tragedy in Orlando, The Trevor Project saw a 70% increase in the demand for their resources and services.
It is The Trevor Project’s goal to raise awareness and funds to support their life-saving resources and services for LGBTQ youth in crisis. “Right now, many LGBTQ young people are feeling unsafe, isolated, and invisible. Often unable to speak to their families or friends about their identities for fear of senseless violence, they turn to Trevor for the validation and support they need,” says Abbe Land, CEO/Executive Director of The Trevor Project.
The San Diego Ambassadors of The Trevor Project are hosting “The Orange Party” on Saturday, September 24, 2016 from 5PM – 9PM at Kimpton Hotel Solamar, a Kimpton Hotels and Restaurant, in downtown San Diego. This annual fundraising event with sponsored bar, food and silent auction, will be a fun-filled party including special performances by Grammy Award-nominated and multi-platinum R&B recording artist, Deborah Cox.
This year’s theme is “Protecting the bright future of our youth”. Guests are encouraged to wear dressy casual attire with a “splash of orange” – The Trevor Project’s signature color – to show support for LGBTQ youth.
With this year’s theme in mind, The Trevor Project is honoring a local transgender San Diego police officer, Christine Garcia, as their 2016 Community Impact Awardee. This award is given to a person who has contributed to the San Diego LGBTQ+ community through service, programs, funding, advocacy, and volunteerism. “Christine Garcia has bravely gone above and beyond the call of duty to be supportive of LGBTQ+ youth while continually inspiring fellow officers and our community to do the same,” says Josh Coyne, Co-Chair of the San Diego Ambassadors for The Trevor Project.” Christine will be in attendance to receive her award from Sgt. Daniel Meyer, LGBT Liaison with the San Diego Police Department.
