Major insurers such as Aetna, Humana and UnitedHealthcare recently announced their exit from state-sponsored insurance exchanges while the uninsured rate has fallen to a historic low, bringing into question the cost and quality of health care in America. With such developments in mind, the personal-finance Web site WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2016’s States with the Best & Worst Health Care.
In order to identify the states with the best health care, WalletHub’s analysts compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across three key dimensions: 1) Health Care Costs, 2) Health Care Access and 3) Health Outcomes.
They evaluated these categories using 29 relevant metrics with their corresponding weights. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with 100 representing the best health care.
They then calculated overall scores for each state using the weighted average across all metrics, which was then used to construct their final ranking.

- 39th – Average Monthly Insurance Premium
- 47th – Number of Hospital Beds per Capita
- 21st – Number of Physicians per Capita
- 19th – Number of Dentists per Capita
- 48th – Physician Medicare Acceptance Rate
- 41st – % of Adults Aged 18 to 64 with Health Insurance
- 37th – % of Children Aged 0 to 17 with Health Insurance
- 39th – % of At-Risk Adults Without a Routine Doctor Visit in Past Two Years
- 27th – % of Adults Without a Dental Visit in Past Year
- 1st – % of Medical Residents Retained
