Townspeople, an organization that helps find housing options for people living with HIV/AIDS, low-income, homelessness and mental illness, has opened 34 new apartments in Normal Heights in an effort to create a community of support.
“We want people to come together in a community to be a part of mainstream society again,” said Townspeople Resource Director Tom McSorley.
Living with HIV/AIDS can isolate its victims, he said. Those who suffer from the disease are continually sick, stigmatized by society and financially disadvantaged by medical bills. Townspeople has empathized with this small, and sometimes forgotten about population since the 1990s, buying three apartment complexes with supportive services over the years.
These apartments are the first to offer two or more bedrooms and are to specifically provide supportive services for those suffering from HIV/AIDS.
