LOS ANGELES — Equality California announced today that it has teamed up with veteran journalist Karen Ocamb, who will write a weekly column on LGBT news and politics, “EQCA POV”. The column will appear each week on Equality California’s website and will be distributed on the organization’s social media platforms.
“This year’s elections, both in California and federally, are of vital importance to the LGBT community – yet there are only a few news outlets that are offering regular, in-depth coverage of electoral, political and public policy issues affecting the LGBT community,” said Rick Zbur, executive director of Equality California. “We are excited that Karen has chosen to work with us to provide regular and frequent LGBT journalistic content to supplement existing news outlets and better inform our members and our community as a whole. Karen is more than an asset to the LGBT community – she is one of the people who helps hold it together.”
Ocamb left a career as a producer at CBS News in 1984, but got back into journalism in 1988, at the height of the AIDS epidemic, to report full-time on challenges facing the LGBT and HIV/AIDS community. A longtime reporter for Southern California LGBT publications, she is considered one of the most respected LGBT journalists in the country.
“I have covered Equality California since the late 1980s when it was the LIFE AIDS Lobby,” said Ocamb. “And I have known Rick Zbur since he ran for Congress in 1996. I am happy to team up with Rick and EQCA to produce timely news stories aimed at LGBT Californians during this critical election year.”
