Darren Criss, the young actor who plays openly gay student Blaine Anderson on the hit series “Glee,” is now poised for solo stardom with the upcoming release of his own album, set for later this year.

Criss, who originally auditioned for the role of Finn, landed the part of Kurt’s gay love interest when show creator Ryan Murphy saw his audition and said immediately “that’s the guy.” Now Criss will join other cast members including Matthew Morrison and Mark Sailing in his decision to release a solo album.

The album, “Starship,” is currently under production with Sony music executives. Criss told Billboard.com reporters that “we’re really excited and it’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. I’m so thrilled that it’s something that can happen because of Glee.” He added that he only hopes he can “do it justice and make it something that people can really enjoy.”

Fortunately for fans of Kurt and Blaine’s relationship, Murphy plans to keep Criss’ character around next season. He explained that Blaine is a “positive role model” in the show’s storyline – something many LGBT allies and fans are sure to appreciate as “Glee” moves into its third season.
