Slovenia, considered to be one of the most liberal countries in Eastern Europe has rejected marriage equality. In a referendum on Sunday only 36.5 percent voted for a bill  that would have allowed same-sex couples to marry;  63.5 percent opposed it, reported The Washington Post.

Conservative groups — backed by the Catholic Church — had pushed the country’s government to ask voters to decide about the bill by collecting 40,000 signatures against it, the report continued. Opponents feared that it would have allowed gay men and lesbians to adopt children, a possibility they said would threaten traditional family values. The overwhelming majority of the 2 million Slovenians is Catholic.

Amnesty Slovenia, which had campaigned in favor of same-sex marriage, tweeted a “sad face” emoticon as news broke that the law had been overturned, reported CNN.

“Sadly no marriage equality in Slovenia,” it tweeted. In a statement about the result on its website, it said that Slovenian law discriminates against people in same-sex relationships in more than 70 aspects of life.
