SAN DIEGO — Ocean Beach Town Council President Gretchen Newsom announced Friday that she is pulling out of the race to become mayor of San Diego.

“I have decided that I will not run for mayor,” Newsom said in a statement. “My husband and I have recently decided to divorce on an amicable basis and, therefore, I need to focus on our son. I appreciate everyone’s respect of our privacy.

“I want to thank my friends, neighbors, and community for the outpouring of support I have received.  I am honored by and grateful for your enthusiasm to stand with me. Our fight for meaningful investments in working families and our communities must continue. I encourage everyone to support raising the minimum wage and other ballot measures and candidates that lift up working families.”

Newsom’s exit leaves incumbent Kecin Faulconer virtually unopposed with six months to go to the June primary.
