Today, faith leaders across denominations gathered outside of Grace Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas, in demonstration of the broad religious support for the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO), writes Maureen McCarty on the HRC Blog.
Tomorrow, Houstonians head to the ballot box to vote “yes” on Proposition 1 to defend HERO, which protects Houston residents and visitors from discrimination in housing, employment and business services on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, religion and 11 other characteristics.
Attendees included Rev Jenni Martin Fairbanks, Rev Vicky Gibbs, Rabbi Joshua Herman of Congregation Beth Israel, Rev. Ron Lister of The International Center for Spiritual and Social Activism and Rabbi Joshua Herman.
“We are all God’s children, and as people of faith, we are called to treat everyone with love and respect,” said Rev. Jenni Martin Fairbank. “That’s why we are encouraging every Houstonian to vote ‘Yes’ on Proposition 1 tomorrow.”
Faith leaders have helped to lead to charge for HERO. Last week, 16 congregations participated in Souls to the Polls, a day of action to raise the voices of people of faith in Houston.
Congratulations to these Faith Leaders for supporting equality for the LGBTs, we need more of them to teach that love and inclusiveness is God’s way, not the hateful discrimination that is going on during these times.
