On Friday, April 15, San Diego students join hundreds of thousands of students nationwide to take a vow of silence to bring attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in their schools.
Sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), the National Day of Silence (DOS) is a day of action in which students across the country take some form of a vow of silence to call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools. Through their activities, students can speak out against harassment and organize for change for their schools and communities.
“GLSEN ran a DOS planning day in March at the LGBT Center where student leaders from about 10 high schools in the county participated,” said Mick Rabin from the San Diego Chapter of GLSEN. Two students were the moderator/ presenters. They organized the DOS planning day around several topics including outreach, posters, messages, allies, teacher/staff buy-in, and ‘Breaking the Silence’ at the end of the day.”
