HAWAII – Hawaii’s Senate Judiciary Committee passed an anti-discrimination bill that would protect transgender people from discrimination against their gender expression in the workplace.
The bill states, “… that all members of the community should have equal access to employment opportunities without regard to their gender expression or identity. Similarly, everyone should feel safe and secure in the workplace, without fear of harm or humiliation.”
The bill previously passed in the state House.
Discrimination against transgender people is currently illegal in housing and public accommodations, but the current ban on employment discrimination was established through rulings of the Civil Rights Commission and not enacted by law. The current bill would remedy that.
The bill must be reconciled with the House version, but is expected to pass.
