Lambda Archives will be continuing an exciting ongoing series of programs featuring the people, organizations and events that have made LGBT history in San Diego Monday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 p.m. Diversionary Theatre is proud to host this Out at the Archives event as part of its Open Monday series.
People of color account for more than half of the LGBT community in San Diego and Hispanics represent the largest part of that group. Because Hispanic LGBT culture represents such a dynamic part of our community, this Out of the Archives event, “Celebrating LGBT Hispanic Heroes”, will welcome a panel of guests whose stories and lives personify the strength, dignity and devotion of our Hispanic LGBT community. September 15-October 15 has been designated Hispanic Heritage month every year beginning in 1988.
“Our collections at the archives include LGBT history in San Diego, but also covers northern Baja California as well,” Lambda Archives Office Manager Walter Meyer said. “The fact that San Diego is a border town makes it unique and is partially why Hispanic LGBT history is so rich in our community.”
The event will feature a brief history of the Latino LGBT community presented by Larry Baza, former president of the San Diego Democrats for Equality, followed by a panel discussion hosted by Fernando Zweifach Lopez, Director of Operations for Pride. The panel will feature members of the LGBT Hispanic community including Nicole Murray Ramirez, a founder of the Imperial Court de San Diego and longtime columnist; Teresa Oyos, co-founder of Orgullo—the first LGBT Latin organization in San Diego; Carolina Alcoser Ramos; coordinator of the Latino/a Services for the San Diego LGBT Community Center; Nicolette Ibara, a volunteer at Clinica Acosida, an HIV/AIDS clinic in Tijuana and Grupo Internacional de la Diversidad Sexual; Andrea Villa, a longtime LGBT and political activist; and Cesar Solis, member of the LGBT fraternity at UCSD and a volunteer for several LGBT organizations.
Matt Morrow, Executive Artistic Director of Diversionary Theatre said, “With Diversionary’s season focused on diversity and inclusion, I’m thrilled to partner once again with Lambda Archives in our Open Monday’s series with this unique event, and give a platform for our Hispanic community to be heard and honored.”
Refreshments will be available before and after the event. The event is free and open to the public, although donations are always encouraged and appreciated. Event information and tickets are available on the Diversionary website: www.diversionary.org & by phone at 619-220-0097. Press inquiries should be directed to Lambda Archives at 619-260-1522.
