It’s never too late! A Change.org petition has appeared to help bring legendary diver Greg Louganis to the iconic Wheaties cereal box.
Louganis set a diving record in the 1984 Olympic games in Los Angeles when he won two gold medals. He became the first man to reach 700 in platform diving. Louganis was diving’s superstar and Swimming World named him “The Greatest Diver Ever”. At the time, General Mills explained Louganis did not meet their “wholesome demographics” to grace the cover of the famed coveted Wheaties box.
The Change.org petition aims to make up for lost time by providing Louganis the same commercial exposure that is widely associated with athletes of his caliber.
States the petition, “Greg Louganis deserves (still) to be on the cover of the Wheaties box. And with marriage equality passing in June of 2015, what a great way to pay it forward to Greg and all of his accomplishments. After watching HBO’s documentary Back on Board: Greg Louganis, I felt inspired to ask General Mills to right a wrong and put him on the Wheaties box.”
You can add your name to the petition here. Then, check out the GLAAD: All Access interview with Louganis here.
Greg Louganis was/is the best Olympic Diver in the USA of the sport. For him to be denied to get on the Wheaties Box because of his sexuality is disgusting!
Right the wrong!
There is no question that Greg Louganis deserves to join other athletes who have been honored on the Wheaties box. It is long overdue that a Wheaties box be dedicated to this amazing athlete and brave American.
Greg Loughis was the best Olympic Diver in history. The only diver to score a perfect ten. G M, correct a wrong, and do a good, place this great athlete on a Wheates box. Thank you.
