The Wisconsin State Journal reported today that John Hawks, University of Wisconsin at Madison associate professor of anthropology, has expressed his criticism of theories suggesting the discovery of the “first homosexual caveman.”
When a male skeleton was found buried in a manner usually reserved for women at a dig site in Prague, some archaeologists speculated that the man was a transsexual or homosexual . Hawks, along with several other scientists, points out the premature and inaccurate hype attached to the skeleton’s popular classification as a “gay caveman.”
“Dudes! I could be wrong, but I think that to have a ‘gay caveman,’ you need a skeleton that is both gay and a caveman,” Hawks wrote in a recent blog post. “This ain’t either!”
In an interview aired on CNN this morning, Hawks and other scientists elaborated on this explanation, saying that the skeleton in question is neither from the pre-Bronze age (or “caveman” era), nor does it provide enough evidence to shed light on the man’s sexuality.
