Statistics have consistently shown that gay and bisexual men– particularly young, Black men– bear the burden of the HIV epidemic nationally. This is similarly reflected in the state of Florida where 63% of new adolescent HIV infections are among Black men.
Saturday, Aug. 1, Equality Florida, the NAACP, Florida A&M University Center for Health Equity, and the Black Treatment Advocates Networks Melbourne and Broward County, in partnership with NASTAD, AIDS United, NMAC, NBGMAC, and the Black AIDS Institute are convening a statewide conversation to engage local and national HIV experts and leaders in making recommendations to expand HIV testing, and improve HIV prevention, treatment, and care for Black gay, bisexual, and other Black men who have sex with men in the state of Florida.
The conversation will include presentations by a number of national and international HIV/AIDS experts including: Douglas M. Brooks, Director of the Office of National AIDS Policy; A. Cornelius Baker, Acting Deputy Coordinator for Affected Populations and Civil Society Leadership, Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator and Health Diplomacy; and Gregorio Millett, Vice President and Director, Public Policy at amfAR. The meeting will be facilitated by Black AIDS Institute President and CEO, Phill Wilson.
“Given the new opportunities and advancements around treatment including Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Treatment as Prevention (TasP), the Black AIDS Institute is proud to support the efforts of local and national leaders in developing programming that responds to the needs of Black MSM in the state of Florida,” said Wilson.
This very important meeting will be held at Pride Center Florida, 2040 N. Dixie Highway, Wilton Manors, Florida 33305 from 10:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Aug. 1.
