Kuehl’s L.A. County-wide PrEP proposal passes

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday passed a motion introduced by Supervisor Sheila Kuehl to deliver Pre‑Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) throughout the County.

The vote was almost unanimous with four of the five supervisors voting yes, reports Frontiermedia.com. Mayor Mike Antonovich abstained instead of voting no.

The report continued, “Antonovich did offer an amendment that appeared to delay the implementation of the plan—an amendment that Kuehl did not consider “friendly” and which did not pass. Supervisor Hilda Solis, however, offered a friendly amendment to ensure that the PrEP implementation plan would be culturally competent, including how the education component was delivered through the media. Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas offered an additional friendly amendment to look into whether the program could be extended into the jail system. Solis also suggested that, since so many of those who testified talked about youth at risk of infection, perhaps PrEP could also be provided in the County operated youth camps. Kuehl accepted both friendly motions, which were then included in the final vote.”
