While the young men attend different high schools in West Virginia, Martin attends Mussleman High School and Westrope attends Hedgesville High School, they shared the right of passage at the Mussleman prom in Inwood, West Virginia. On the day that the Supreme Court hears arguments for legalizing same sex marriage in the United States, the Martin/Westrope prom date is indicative of how far America has come in the last ten years.
Martin and Westrope slow danced and held hands, just like the other prom couples. They were not harassed or heckled. They simply stared in each other’s eyes and dreamed of what might be. That is real change.
