1,000 online supporters recently cast votes in an online poll to determine the decade’s most empowering LGBT anthem. The poll, conducted by the equality charity Stonewall, revealed Christina Aguilera’s 2003 hit “Beautiful” as the big winner among lesbian, gay and bisexual voters.
Aguilera was “delighted” with the results of the poll, and stated that “my gay fan base is so important to me and this continues my special relationship with them.”
Runners up to Aguilera’ s 33% lead included second place winner “Better” by Boyzone at 25% of the vote and Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” coming in third with 17% of the vote.
Paul Gambaccini, known as the “Professor of Pop,” commented on the poll’s results, noting that “many of the United States’ leading female vocalists have recorded anthems of self-empowerment as a response to bullying homophobia and misogyny in schools and society” and explaining that these songs have subsequently won followers within the LGBT community.
