MONTGOMERY— Today, HRC Alabama confirmed that no probate office in the state is distributing certificates of marriage to same-sex couples. Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore and anti-equality forces, like the Alabama Policy Institute and Alabama Citizens Action Program, have put Alabama probate judges in a state of unnecessary confusion. As a result, many probate judges have chosen to halt same-sex marriages until the United State Supreme Court decides the matter later this year.
“Despite reduced coverage of the legal back-and-forth surrounding Alabama’s unconstitutional ban on marriage, Alabamians should not ignore the fact that full marriage equality is not accessible in the state,” said HRC Vice President of Communications and Marketing Fred Sainz. “But we are confident that the United States Supreme Court will be on the right side of history and affirm all same-sex couples have the legal right to marry.”

Earlier this year, U.S. District Judge Callie V.S. Granade ruled in favor of marriage equality in Searcy v. Strange, striking down Alabama’s discriminatory constitutional amendment that banned same-sex couples from marrying. Since then, Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore has campaigned vocally against marriage equality.
