City Councilman Todd Gloria announced today that he will run for the State Assembly 78th District seat in 2016. The seat is held by Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins, who will be termed out.
In an email to his supporters Gloria wrote, “I was truly humbled to serve as interim mayor of San Diego and to begin the process of restoring your trust in our city government. Together, we have stabilized the city’s budget, advocated for housing, protected our environment, and stood up for working families.”
Gloria, who represents District 3 that covers much of central San Diego continued, “I want to continue that progress as San Diego’s voice in our State Capitol … That’s why I’m announcing today that I am running for State Assembly in the 78th District.”
At the same time former federal prosecutor Sarah Boot, announced her decision to withdraw from the contest and endorse her friend and ally Gloria.
Boot wrote to her supporters this morning, “Todd Gloria, current San Diego City Councilmember and former mayor, has decided to run for this seat … This obviously changes the landscape of my race in a significant way.
“Above all, I am mindful of the time and resources of my supporters – this has weighed heavily on my decision. Additionally, Todd and I are friends and allies, he has been serving our community well in public office for many years, and we see eye-to-eye on so many issues. I am confident that Todd will continue to serve our community well in the 78th Assembly District. For this reason, I am supporting him in this election, and I encourage you to do the same.”
Gloria acknowledging Boot’s support wrote, “I would also like to mention how excited I am that Sarah Boot is supporting me. Sarah and I share many of the same goals. As a community leader, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney, and an attorney representing technology companies, Sarah has seen first-hand the importance of restoring excellence in our schools, expanding job training opportunities, protecting San Diego’s natural resources, and preventing crime. Hers is an important voice for San Diego families, and it is fortunate that we are working together. I’m glad to have her support as I announce my candidacy today.”
