San Diego Opera honors 50 years with anniversary celebration concerts

San Diego Opera celebrates its 50th anniversary with two celebration concerts Saturday, April 18 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 19 at 2 p.m. at The Jacobs Music Center at Copley Symphony Hall, 750 B St. in San Diego, presented by U.S. Bank. Tickets start at $45. A selection of opera’s greatest hits featuring arias, duets, ensembles and choruses will be performed by the San Diego Opera Chorus, the San Diego Symphony and a roster of internationally renowned artists including sopranos Lise Lindstrom and Emily Magee, mezzo soprano Marianne Cornetti, tenor René Barbera, baritones Stephen Powell and Scott Sikon and bass Reinhard Hagen. Maestro Karen Kamensek will conduct these performances.

“This will be a wonderful celebration of San Diego Opera’s tradition of presenting music of the great operatic masters beautifully sung,” shares Carol Lazier, the Opera’s president of the board of directors. “These concerts also enable us to thank the San Diego Symphony in their own home, our long term collaboration with them has led to years of making great art together and we look forward to our future with them.”

These concerts celebrate San Diego Opera’s 50th anniversary as a producing opera company. The San Diego Opera Guild was founded in 1950 to present San Francisco Opera productions in the San Diego community. San Diego Opera Association was created in 1965 as a producing company and presented its first staging, La bohème, in the newly opened San Diego Civic Theatre. Over the next 50 years, San Diego Opera has become a widely respected member of the international opera community and an invaluable cultural resource to the San Diego region.

“U.S. Bank honors and respects the value that the arts bring to the community,” said Steve Stuckey, president of U.S. Bank in San Diego. “We are delighted to support the San Diego Opera, now in its 50th year. Our mission goes beyond providing loans and bank accounts. Our goal is to power the potential of the San Diego community, investing in future growth by supporting rich cultural and artistic experiences.”
