In a rebuff of a request to prevent same sex marriages from beginning in Alabama, the US Supreme Court in a 7-2 ruling indicated that same sex couples should be able to marry beginning today. Many leaders in the LGBT community believe that the ruling is a harbinger of the vote expected from the Supreme Court later this year with respect to same sex marriage nationwide.
The two dissenting Supreme Court Justices were Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. Thomas writing in the dissenting opinion said this “represents yet another example of this Court’s increasingly cavalier attitude toward the States.” He continued, “This acquiescence may well be seen as a signal of the Court’s intended resolution of (the same sex) question. This is not the proper way to discharge our Article III responsibilities. And, it is indecorous for this Court to pretend that it is.”
“I never thought I’d say this, but Justice Thomas is right. The LGBT community does believe this a good sign with respect to the ruling that is expected in June to resolve the same sex marriage issue nationwide. For once I can say from Justice Thomas’s mouth to God’s ears,” said Stampp Corbin, former Co-Chair of the National Obama LGBT Leadership Council.
