COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.-The Board of Directors of the Colorado Springs Pride Center announced today that they had formally dissolved the Colorado Springs Pride Center, a local nonprofit that serves the LGBT community in the Pikes Peak region. The organization, which was founded in 1978, is one of the nation’s oldest LGBT community centers. The decision to end the Pride Center’s run was difficult and emotional.
The choice was a complicated and challenging one for the current Board of Directors. The Pride Center has been a force for positive change for decades in the Pikes Peak region, providing assistance, advocacy and support for the LGBT public. However, after an exhaustive exploration of the options, the decision was made to allow the nonprofit to come to an end.
Unretired debt from years past, as well as management issues, combined to create an untenable situation and one that could not be overcome without placing the nonprofit in further straits. The Board of Directors reached consensus last Thursday while in its monthly board meeting.
The Board of Directors is confident that Colorado Springs LGBT stakeholders will step in to see that the needs of the community continue to be addressed.
