San Diego’s only LGBT swim team, the Different Strokes Swim Team (DSST) presented a $1,700 check to Christie’s Place Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Mission Valley YMCA Pool.

The check was from money raised from DSST’s Bart Hopple Memorial Swim, which the club has run every year since 1991. The Bart Hopple Memorial Swim honors its co-founder, Bart Hopple, who passed away due to complications from AIDS.

The objective of the memorial swim is for individual team members to complete as many lengths of the pool as possible in a continuous one hour swim. Team members collect pledges from family and friends, who donate money on a per length or per hour swim basis.

The recipient of the 2014 check, Christie’s Place is the only organization in San Diego whose mission is dedicated to serving women, children and families infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Elizabeth Woodhouse, operations manager of Christie’s Place accepted the check in the poolside ceremony Saturday.

DSST is a swim team and social club whose mission is to promote swimming for lesbian, gay, straight, bisexual, transgender and their friends in a team-oriented, coached setting. All ages and ability levels welcome. For more information on DSST visit www.dsst.org
