SAN DIEGO – Kathleen Hansen has been named co-director of the San Diego Chorus of Sweet Adelines International effective Oct. 1. “We are delighted to announce this well-deserved promotion to Kathleen who will work closely alongside long-time San Diego Chorus Artistic Director Kim Vaughn to provide additional musical assistance as Vaughn prepares for retirement in late 2015 after a 30-year career with the chorus,” said Team Leader Claudia Cannon.
Hansen joined the San Diego Chapter of Sweet Adelines in 2000, just in time to make history in the international chorus competition by doing handsprings across the Portland Rose Arena stage, helping San Diego to win the gold medal in 2001. She was assistant director from 2000 to 2008 and has been associate chorus director since 2008. “I am thrilled to stand in front of the San Diego Chorus each week and experience its energy and musicality. It is truly an honor to work alongside Kim Vaughn, stated Hansen. “She has been a wonderful mentor for many years, and I look forward to continuing to learn from her.”
Hansen earned a bachelor’s degree in music education specializing in trumpet, a teaching credential in music, and a master’s of music in instrumental conducting from SDSU. Now a highly sought-after adjudicator and clinician, she previously taught music at local schools as well as varsity band and beginning conducting at SDSU.
She also directs the men’s Barbershop Harmony Society’s Sun Harbor Chorus, and the Tremble Clefs (a therapeutic chorus for people with Parkinson’s and their care givers/loved ones), is the Artistic Director of the San Diego Women’s Chorus, and works with the barbershop Youth in Harmony program.
San Diego Chorus will present its annual holiday show The Holiday Café on Wednesday, December 10 at 7pm at Torrey Pines Christian Church, Hashinger Hall, 8320 La Jolla Scenic Drive North, La Jolla, CA 92037. Tickets can be purchased at www.sdchorus.org or (619) 796-5162.
