SDSU ranks high for diversity

San Diego State University (SDSU) was selected for the second consecutive year as a recipient of the INSIGHT Into Diversity Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award.

As a recipient of the annual HEED Award — a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — SDSU will be featured along with 82 other recipients in the magazine’s November 2014 issue.

“We are very proud to be selected as a recipient of the HEED Diversity award,” said Aaron Bruce, SDSU’s chief diversity officer. “Diversity and excellence go hand-in-hand and this award reflects the ongoing commitment of our campus community to ensure that everyone who sets foot on campus experiences the university as a welcoming and supportive place.”

Diversity at SDSU
INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected SDSU for its exemplary diversity and inclusion initiatives and for its ability to embrace a broad definition of diversity on campus, including gender, race, ethnicity, veterans, people with disabilities and members of the LGBTQ community.

At SDSU, students from all backgrounds are achieving academic excellence. Steady improvement in graduation and retention rates spans all genders and ethnicities, including students from historically underrepresented groups.

The award is open to all colleges and universities throughout the United States and measures an institution’s level of achievement and intensity of commitment in regard to broadening diversity and inclusion on campus through initiatives, programs and outreach, student recruitment, retention, and completion and hiring practices for faculty and staff.

“We hope the HEED award serves as a way to honor those institutions of higher education that recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion as part of their everyday campus culture,” said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
