PASADENA, Calif. — One Direction fans all over the world are dressing up in rainbows to attend the concerts of their favorite band. In this way they are showing their support to the LGBTQ members of the One Direction community. Calling themselves “Rainbow Direction”, they connect with each other through the social media platform Tumblr to meet up at concerts, craft their own rainbow gear and make LGBTQ supportive banners to show to the boys, the cameras, but most of all, each other.
Rainbow Direction was born in February 2014, when a few fans joined forces through Takemehomefromnarnia, an LGBTQ action platform, and decided to set up a campaign to raise visibility for the LGBTQ community during One Direction’s Where We Are Tour. They wrote out a banner contest, sold T-shirts with the winning design for charity, and participant subscriptions quickly started seeping in. 6 out of 10 South-American shows were covered, 9 out of 10 on the British Isles, and Rainbow Directioner was represented at all 17 European shows .
As participants started sharing how empowering the experience was, reporting positive reactions from the artists and members of the public and proudly posting their rainbow selfies online, numbers continued to increase. Rainbows will be seen at each of the shows One Direction plays in North America, and this week’s dates mark a record high with 44 Californian participants. Rainbow Direction’s aim is to continue LGBTQ support throughout the 2015 On the Road Again Tour, taking the singers, and the rainbows to three more continents.
TakeMeHomeFromNarnia is a community of fans committed to equality and diversity, which originally formed to combat homophobia and cyberbullying, and to create a safe space for LGBTQ fans on social media platforms. It currently operates as a launching platform and support group for LGBTQ related actions by fans. Takemehomefromnarnia provides knowhow, support and resources for grassroots initiatives that are in keeping with its mission, goals, and values.
