Rainbow flags line 5th Avenue in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter

The 40th anniversary of San Diego Pride kicked off in the Gaslamp Quarter Wednesday.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer together with  members of the Gaslamp Quarter Association and San Diego LGBT Pride raised dual rainbow flags over Fifth Avenue. The flags are among 124 that will fly over downtown streets.

The celebration took place Wednesday afternoon on the corner of Fifth Avenue and L Street. The mayor climbed into a scissor lift and helped raise the 124 flags in support of gay rights, reported NBC 7 San Diego.

According to the mayor’s office, the ceremony aimed to celebrate the “diversity and inclusiveness in the heart of San Diego’s Historic Gaslamp Quarter.”

San Diego’s Pride parade and festival will take place next weekend, July 18-20.
