The LGBT community is being urged to attend a March 21 public hearing of the Redistricting Commission to ensure San Diego City Council District 3 remains unchanged. The show of support is being organized by the newly-formed LGBT Redistricting Task Force.
San Diego is expanding its eight Districts into nine, and all Council Districts could be redrawn.
Redistricting is a vitally important process for all members of the LGBT community, according to the Task Force. The creation of District 3 – which includes the LGBT-friendly Hillcrest, North Park, University Heights, Golden Hills and neighboring communities – during the 1990 redistricting process, was a huge step toward equality for the LGBT community. It has resulted in the election of three consecutive LGBT City Council members.
The City’s Redistricting Commission is holding public hearings to receive input from San Diego citizens. The first of these public meetings is March 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the City of San Diego Metro Operations Center II Auditorium, 9192 Topaz Way in San Diego.
The LGBT Task Force is organizing and coordinating community action and participation in the redistricting process. To ensure that this LGBT friendly council district is preserved, the LGBT community needs to prove that it is a Community of Interest. This can be accomplished through a strong, consistent and organized show of support through the Redistricting Task Force.
The LGBT Task Force is asking community members to have a large show of support for keeping District 3 intact at the March 21 meeting. Attendees are urged to wear lavender or purple.
