SAN DIEGO — Thursday was a big day for Supervisor Dave Roberts and his staff as the County of San Diego celebrated the launch of the “LGBT and Allies Association” employee resource group.
Employee resource groups raise cultural awareness, highlight diversity and encourage leadership and professional development within their membership. For those reasons, Supervisor Roberts spearheaded the creation of the group.
The County of San Diego employs nearly 17,000 people, and resource groups exist for Filipino, Latino and African American employees. Their representatives meet regularly with county executives and one another.
“I have pushed for the formation of an LGBT resource group since I took office,” Roberts said. “This is just another way to recognize and celebrate the diversity of our workforce.”
Also present at Thursday’s ceremonies at the County Operations Center were Supervisors Greg Cox and Ron Roberts and the county’s top executive, Chief Administrative Officer Helen Robbins-Meyer.
The event drew more than 175 people and included remarks by Maureen Steiner of the Lambda Archives as well as a performance by the San Diego Gay Men’s Choir.
“My colleagues and I talk a lot about why the County of San Diego is great,” Roberts said. “I att
ribute that greatness to one thing above all others — our workforce.”
Roberts is the first new member on the Board of Supervisors in 18 years and is the first openly-gay member of the panel.
