In last nights Academy Awards, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, Jared Leto took home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of Rayon, a trans woman living with AIDS in 1980s Texas, in Focus Feature’s Dallas Buyers Club. While accepting the award, Leto said “This is for the 36 million people who have lost the battle with AIDS. And to those of you out there who have ever felt injustice because of who you are or who you love, I stand here in front of the world with you and for you.”
Matthew McConaughey won Best Actor for his role in the same film, which also won the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
For the first time, a film directed by a black filmmaker — Steve McQueen of 12 Years a Slave — won best picture and a Latino — Alfonso Cuaron of Gravity — took home best director.
