DVD of the Week: Stieg Larsson Trilogy

Noomi Rapace

The Stieg Larsson Trilogy, a box set that includes The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest

If you missed these films when they were playing at the Landmark Hillcrest, they’re now packaged together in a handy-dandy box set.

In all three movies, Noomi Rapace is Lisbeth Salander, the bisexual punk rock hacker, and Michael Nyqvist is Mikael Blomkvist, the idealist reporter of a certain age, and together, they fight crime. And sometimes have sex. In Sweden!

While they decrease in quality as the series progresses, as serial rapist-killer whodunnits go, they’re still vastly better than anything Hollywood has produced in years. In fact, I would venture to say that Dragon Tattoo is one of the best crime movies of the last decade.

You will never forget Rapace’s performances in these films. She’s wily, damaged, sexy and deliciously violent: hardcore. Nyqvist, meanwhile, manages to be pock-marked, paunchy, and, damn sexy, too.

All three titles are also available on Netflix Instant, which is cheaper than a box set, but you don’t get any of the extras found in the trilogy.
