Heartfelt, uplifting, joyous, and sometimes haunting, the San Diego Women’s Chorus’ (SDWC) upcoming holiday concert Light Up the World promises to delight and inspire audiences and marks a return to a holiday-themed winter concert for the growing chorus. Under the direction of Christopher Allen, and with assistance from the chorus’ new Assistant Director Kathleen Hansen, SDWC will present their 26th annual winter concert Saturday Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. and Sunday Dec. 8 at 5 p.m. at the University Christian Church, 3900 Cleveland Ave., in Hillcrest.
Light Up the World celebrates the wonderful things about the winter holiday season: family, togetherness, love, warmth, hope, and all the winter goodwill that lights up the world during this time of year. The San Diego Women’s Chorus will perform uplifting songs about Christmas, Hanukkah, Diwali and winter solstice, as well as other joyous and thoughtful songs from around the globe, including pieces from Nigeria, Puerto Rico and Iraq. Audience members will be treated to familiar holiday tunes like the Hanukah classic “S’vivon,” a jazz version of “Carol of the Bells,” Amy Grant’s “Grown Up Christmas List” and the reflective song “Believe” from the movie The Polar Express. Attendees will be greeted to the sounds of a Nigerian welcoming chant, experience the haunting call for peace in “Iraqi Peace Song,” and celebrate the season with the Puerto Rican carol “Venid, Pastores a Belen.”
Tickets for Light Up the World are on sale now. Advanced sale tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for seniors/military/youth (3-17). Children under 3 will be admitted for free, but may be required to sit on an adult’s lap. Ticket prices at the door will be $20 and $15, as available. Tickets are available for purchase at sdwc.org.
