Singer Bobby Jo Valentine will perform his unique brand of “hopeful folk/pop” music Friday, Oct. 11 at the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC), 2633 Denver Street in San Diego at 7 p.m.
Valentine is a winner of the 2013 Rising Star Contest and L.A. Weekly described his music as containing “clever melodies, witty wordplay” and that he is “the nicest guy to ever pick up an acoustic guitar.”
Valentine is based in San Francisco and lives with his partner in Petaluma. He won Songwriter of the Year by the West Coast Songwriters Association. Some of the lyrics to his songs are described as “exploring the tense high wire between light and dark, but doesn’t always wrap things up with a tidy answer.”
His most recent album is Home, and his music was featured in a 2013 Ford Fusion television commercial. Many reviews mention his charm and his songs are filled with “uplifting, honest messages about hope and life’s struggles,” according to Bruce Kaplan, of Folk Unlimited.
He sang several songs during a service at MCC several months ago and was invited back.
