Community Conversations: Verdi and Gustav III: A Fateful Encounter in Stockholm

Community Conversations are exciting and thought-provoking collaborations at well-known institutions around town discussing the powerful themes in San Diego Opera’s 2014 season. A panel of experts on Swedish history, theater and opera will talk about the main subject of Verdi’s opera A Masked Ball, King Gustav III of Sweden who was assassinated at a masked ball at the opera house in Stockholm in 1792. In a free-ranging and fascinating discussion, these experts will look at Gustav’s life and reign, the political reasons for his assassination, and compare the opera’s story to the real-life history of this multi-faceted monarch. Liberally enhanced by musical examples from the opera by Dr. Reveles at the keyboard, this will be an evening of Swedish history and Italian music that you will not want to miss! The panel will include: Dr. Anne-Charlotte Harvey, School of Theatre, Television and Film, SDSU (ret.); Dr. Michael Harvey, School of Theatre, Television and Film, SDSU (ret.) and Dr. Nicolas Reveles, The Geisel Director of Education and Outreach, San Diego Opera.
