The Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast of San Diego County’s co-chairs, City Commissioners Nicole Murray Ramirez and Robert Gleason have announced that this year’s honorees will be Gov. Barbara Roberts, the first elected woman governor of Oregon and a long-time civil rights and women’s advocate, and Academy Award winner Dustin Lance Black, who wrote the screenplay for the movie Milk and J. Edgar. Black also wrote and produced the highly acclaimed play 8.
“Gov. Roberts has been an outstanding advocate for social justice and has spoken out for full GLBT equality all her life,” stated City Commissioner Murray Ramirez who founded the Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast seven years ago. Gov. Roberts will receive the Harvey Milk Lifetime Achievement Award.
“The torch of GLBT leadership and activism has been passed on to a new generation and Dustin Lance Black has, in these past years, become one of the most eloquent and respected,” said Commissioner Murray Ramirez. Black will receive the Harvey Milk Civil Rights Award.
According to Commissioner Gleason more than 900 tickets have already been sold for the Friday, May 24 Diversity Breakfast, to be held at the Hilton by the Bay.
The annual breakfast honoring Milk’s legacy is always sold out and for the first time a naval honor guard will present the colors for the national anthem.
Stuart Milk will also be in attendance for a private invitation-only reception Thursday night, honoring Gov. Roberts and Black. This reception will be sponsored by the Harvey Milk Foundation.
The annual Diversity Breakfast is sponsored by The LGBT Community Center and the City of San Diego’s Human Rights Commission. The Diversity Breakfast, along with the annual Martin Luther King All People Breakfast and the Cesar Chavez Unity Breakfast have become the three premier civil rights events that draw huge crowds and top elected officials.
