HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — With his hand locked firmly in the grasp of his boyfriend’s, Earvin Johnson III, son of basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson, was spotted by TMZ.com on Sunset Boulevard yesterday dressed in a none-too-subtle black fur coat, red hand bag and black stockings. The 20-year-old was approached by a reporter and asked if the L.A. Dodgers (his father is part owner) were going to make it this season. “I hope so. I’m going to hope and pray on it.” When the reporter pressed him on whether or not he knew of any insider trades that might be coming up, EJ, as he is called by his family, retorted, “Sir, I wish I could help you but I have no insider trades.”
The short interview quickly turned to more serious matters when the reporter, commenting on the recent multi-million dollar revamp of the Dodgers stadium, remarked, “I’ve got to be honest. The one thing I’m looking forward to is some new bathrooms up in there.” EJ stopped, turned to the reporter and commented, “I’m sure the bathrooms will be fabulous.”
Remarkably, there were no discussions of EJ’s couture or his personal life. (Nor are we are of any published reports of the name of the handsome young man he was with.)
For his part, Magic Johnson said in a published statement that “Cookie and I love EJ and support him in every way. We’re very proud of him.”
Magic Johnson is himself no stranger to controversy. In 1991 he went public with his admission that he had contracted the HIV virus and urged people not discriminate against those with HIV or AIDS. He also hoped to change the public debate on the disease which, in the minds of many Americans, was still largely associated with gay men and drug users.
