(CNN) — CNN’s Anderson Cooper was presented with the Vito Russo Award at the 24th annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York on Saturday by a very special “Boy Scout”: Madonna.
The singer dressed up in uniform to deliver Anderson’s statue, which is given to an LGBT media professional who’s made a difference in promoting equality.
Madge’s outfit was a nod to GLAAD’s campaign against the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on having openly gay members in its organization.
Before presenting Cooper with his award, Madonna said, “I wanted to be a Boy Scout, but they wouldn’t let me join. I think that’s f****d up.
“I can build a fire. I know how to pitch a tent. I have a very good sense of direction. I can rescue kittens from trees. I want to do good for the community,” she continued. “And most importantly, I know how to scout for boys. So I think that I should be allowed to be a Boy Scout – and I think they should change their stupid rules.”
But then she got down to business, telling those gathered at the New York event that she was there to give an award to someone she admires and to “acknowledge someone who is brave.”
As Cooper accepted his award, he managed to sneak in a smooch from the superstar — a first!
Other winners at Saturday’s event were NBC’s “Smash,” which won for outstanding drama series, and CBS’s “The Amazing Race,” which won for outstanding reality program.
